BUDDHAANDZ
Buddhaandz: A Modern Art Studio Blending Buddhism and Pop Culture
Buddhaandz uses a variety of old and new techniques to blend Buddhist mythologies with pop culture.
The artist was raised in a Buddhist environment and has always been fascinated by the religion. As a child, he would attend Sunday Buddhist school and learn about the Chadok tales from the Buddha’s teaching, Conandhawisan.

While his father is an avid amulet collector, the artist was never drawn to the conventional aspects of Buddhism. He was more interested in art toys, which led him to create his unique style of Buddhist-inspired art.

Buddhaandz work is often described as “eye-catching” and “handmade.” He uses ordinary objects from Buddhist culture and transforms them into works of art. For example, he has created a holy water bowl inspired by the four lotuses and a perfume that is consecrated similar to holy water.
His work, “Buddha and Jataka Tales,” is inspired by the Jataka tales, which are stories about the Buddha’s previous lives. The artist selected parts of the stories that he himself understood and enjoyed, and combined them with stories of remembering one’s life from many movies.

Buddhaandz believes in the cycle of rebirth and death, and his work explores this concept in a unique and creative way. He is interested in the space between the known and the unknown, and his work invites viewers to interpret it in their own way.
His work is not only about telling the story of Buddhism, but also about connecting Dhamma to the world around us. His designs take into account the environment, and his ultimate goal is to inspire people to live in harmony with themselves and others.

GILES RYDER
Born in Brisbane, Australia.
Lives and works between Australia and Thailand.
A graduate of Griffith University in Brisbane, he also undertook Postgraduate studies at Sydney College of Art and Kunsthochschule Berlin, with funding from Anne & Gordon Samstag International Visual Arts Scholarship.

The psychological and physical aspects of colour and light and their impact on how we re-imagine and interpret space are central to the art of Giles Ryder.

The zing of ‘kandy-coloured’ neon, the soft ambient rosy glow from a pink flouro tube, the disquiet of violet, and the sleek reflective surfaces of machined metal utilized in his works impact our senses and perceptions of space and objects.

Ryder’s works are hybrids of the found and the factory-made. He uses only recycled neon tubes and electrical elements, yet implements his honed industrial skills to custom-make machine tooled metal forms and apply meticulous auto-lacquer finishes. He takes a reductive approach to form, colour and line; in many instances, often distilled and pared to the minimum, yet always cognisant of ‘affect’

Selected solo exhibitions include Black Magic (2012), Blockprojects, Melbourne; Artereal Gallery (2011), Sydney; The New Nouveaux Nullism (2010), Ryan Renshaw Gallery, Brisbane; Life without Rituals (2010), Blockprojects, Melbourne; and Vectorize (2009), Raum Weiss, Berlin. JOHN ASLANIDIS
The artistic practice of Melbourne-based artist John Aslanidis has a strong correlation with emergence theory, where complex patterns emerge out of simple interactions; from the artist asking a passer-by for directions to the Guggenheim and learning that they collect abstraction to a chance encounter on the A Train to Brooklyn with a man who so happens to be Basquiat’s former housemate.
Aslanidis’ canvases are composed using a set of mathematical intervals, not unlike a musical score, in a contradictory process of order and chaos.
