THE ARTIST
​

Somboon Hormtientong (1949) is an installation artist whose work is widely recognized by the local and international art scene as an abstract painter.

 

Born and rised in Bangkok, he was a student of Tang Chang, one of the most recognized Thai abstract artists, before continuing his education in Munich, Germany.

​

Focused on the installation work, but ultimately use a process of painting on canvas due to limitation of space resulting in an abstraction brushstrokes, Somboon’s work ranges from drawing and abstract painting to sculpture and installation.

 

He represents Thailand at the 57th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia with “Krung Thep Bangkok” supported by the Thai Office of Contemporary Art and Culture (OCAC).

Somboon's works are widely collected by many prominent collectors around the world. To be mentioned, his work "The Unheard Voice" which was exhibited at the National Gallery in Bangkok, later acquried in 1995 by Mr. Petch Osatanugrah, will be a core piece at "Dib Bangkok" Museum of Contemporary Art which will be opened in 2024.
